SEO for Plumbers: How Plumbing Companies Get Found on Google and in AI Answers

A plumbing company gets found in local search through a complete Google Business Profile set up as a service-area business, a page for each plumbing service, and honest reviews from every call. Google itself names plumbers as an example of a service-area business, and it says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.[1][2]

How do plumbers show up in local search?

When someone searches for a plumber near them, Google shows local results in Maps and Search. Which plumbers appear depends mainly on relevance, distance and popularity.[3][4]

Google calls the third factor prominence and says it also depends on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. That part you can build, job by job.[5]

How should a plumber set up a Google Business Profile?

Google names plumbers as an example of a service-area business: one that visits customers but doesn't serve them at its own address. Google says a service-area business should hide its address.[1][6][7]

  • List the towns or ZIP codes you serve. Google allows up to 20 service areas and says the whole area shouldn't extend more than about 2 hours of driving from where you're based.[8][9]
  • Use your real business name, with no towns or services added. Google says extra information in the name isn't permitted and can get a profile suspended.[10][11]
  • Pick the most specific category for your main business, and don't use categories as keywords.[12][13]
  • Keep your hours accurate, including when you answer emergency calls. Google says complete and accurate information makes a profile more likely to show up in local results.[14]
  • If Google asks you to verify by video, it suggests a service-area business record itself doing the work or opening its branded van.[15]

Which pages should a plumbing website have?

Give each service you sell its own page: drain cleaning, water heaters, leak repair, sewer lines, repiping, or whatever you really do. Say what the job includes, what changes the price, and what happens when someone calls you with an emergency.

Be careful with town pages. Google's spam policies list pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page as an example of doorway abuse, and blocks of text that list cities as an example of keyword stuffing.[16][17]

A town page is worth having when it says something true and specific about your work there. If the only thing that changes from page to page is the town name, leave it out.

How should a plumber get more Google reviews?

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Ask every customer when the job is done, with a Google review link or a QR code.[18][19]

  • Never offer a discount on the next drain cleaning in return for a review. Google treats that as fake and misleading content.[20]
  • Ask everyone, not only the customers you know are happy. Google's content policy does not allow businesses to selectively ask for positive reviews.[21]
  • Reply to reviews, and make each reply about that job. Google advises against sending the same thank-you to everyone and against using replies to offer deals.[22][23][24]

What should a plumber post on a Business Profile?

Posts let you share updates, offers and events on your profile in Search and Maps. A water heater you installed this week, with a photo and a short note, makes a good update.[25]

Leave phone numbers out of the post text: Google says a post with a phone number may be rejected if the number can't be verified as yours. Posts older than 6 months are archived unless they have a date range.[26][27]

How do plumbers get named in AI answers?

Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page has to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet, and Google lists keeping your Business Profile up to date among the basics that still matter.[28][29][30]

Assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude also answer questions like who to call about a burst pipe. The only way to know whether they name you is to ask them the questions your customers ask, and to keep asking.

Is AI-written content safe for a plumbing website?

Google says AI-generated content should be fact-checked and reviewed before publishing, and lists using AI to generate many pages without adding value as an example of scaled content abuse. A few pages that say something specific about your own work beat many pages that don't.[31][32]

What does DigiRank do for a plumbing company?

DigiRank handles the routine parts of the work above and leaves the judgment calls to you.

  • Asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude the questions your customers ask, such as who fixes water heaters in your town, on a schedule you set. It records whether your company is named, which competitors are named and which sources each answer cites.
  • Drafts posts that answer customers' plumbing questions and can run each draft through a publish check for AI-sounding phrasing, broken links and near-duplicate content. You still review and fact-check every draft.
  • Sends finished posts to your WordPress site as drafts for you to review, or publishes them if you choose.
  • Drafts Business Profile posts and holds them for your approval unless you switch on auto-approve.
  • Drafts a reply to a Google review from what the customer wrote. If you turn on automatic replies, it posts them only for the star ratings you choose.
  • Pulls your Search Console and GA4 data every day, so you can see which searches and pages bring visitors to your site.
  • Crawls your site, reports errors and warnings, and scores your homepage's page speed on mobile and desktop.

DigiRank does not write reviews or buy rankings. Google says no one can request or pay for a better local ranking.[2]

Is a plumber a service-area business on Google?

Usually, yes. Google names plumbers as an example of a service-area business, one that visits customers but doesn't serve them at its own address.[1][6]

How far can a plumber's service area go?

Google says the whole service area shouldn't extend more than about 2 hours of driving from where the business is based, and a profile can list up to 20 service areas.[9][8]

Can I put my phone number in Business Profile posts?

It's safer not to. Google says a post with a phone number in the text may be rejected if the number can't be verified as the business's.[26]

Which AI assistants does DigiRank check?

ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. You choose the questions, such as who fixes water heaters in your town, and DigiRank records whether your company is named and which sources each answer cites.

Will DigiRank publish anything without my approval?

It depends on the setting. Business Profile posts wait for your approval unless you switch on auto-approve, and review replies post on their own only if you turn that on. Blog posts can go to WordPress as drafts, but some of DigiRank's publishing options post straight to your site, so check the setting before you use one.
